A “Politically Correct” Christmas

A poem

My friend, if you would bear with me,
imagine a Nativity
where non-believers (some, our friends)
would not be hurt or take offense.

The heavenly choirs would glow and smile,
but not announce the newborn child.
And if the shepherds were to know,
they wouldn’t tell, and might not go.

The magi (of a pagan race)
might balk at going to a Jewish place;
The Jewish scriptures they would shirk
when these proclaim a Bethle’m birth.

But come to think of it, God himself
might doubt to send his Son at all,
for his mighty works and words, we know,
were much against the status quo,
and claims to godhood and being “the Way”
went against the grain and caused dismay.

As I imagine a Nativity
that fails to offend… it ceases to be.
