An Anniversary I Often Forget

No, it’s not our wedding anniversary!

They say men are most likely to forget that date and sadden their spouses.

Ours was nearly impossible to forget: February 14th! We hadn’t chosen that day on purpose but ended up changing the “original” date due to my sister’s spring break as a teacher.

It was a fun time to celebrate over the years, with disadvantages.

I didn’t usually get a paycheck until the 15th. So sometimes we waited to go out.

On that day, restaurants are full to the max and often require reservations and/or have special, more expensive menus. (Once we were relegated to a table in the children’s play area!)

Even in Mexico (our home), the timing was not ideal for getaway weekends. In the “sierra” or mountain area we loved, the weather could be quite chilly. On the coast, it is “norte” season, when a rainy north wind once wrecked a hoped-for beach holiday.

This year, I found a printed-out list my now-deceased husband had prepared years ago, with a hundred or so dates for people’s birthdays and anniversaries. To my amazement, he not only had the date for the day I finally — after six years — said “yes” to him, but even the exact time! I…
