And as still happens in some cultures today, a young woman would seldom be able to go anywhere unaccompanied, for protection in different ways. When I came to Mexico years ago, at age 17, the girl from the Mexican family I lived with and I were invited to a party. Her youngest (single) uncle was asked to go with us as a chaperone!
