Evergreen

A post-Christmas poem

O evergreen!

no-longer-green

remind me

not to follow

your sad example.

Decked for a season,

Gaily a-twinkle

basking in the abundance

at your feet.

Then suddenly

the gifts are gone,

your countenance

turns pale and wan.

You no longer deserve

your colorful attire;

Thus you are stripped

and cast in the mire.

O evergreen

teach me

to remain a-light

not for a season

or a fortnight.

May rejoicing,

gay colors,

glad gifts abound

Not only at Christmas

but all year round.
