His Word Prunes Me

Today I was reminded, as I read John 15, that the Greek word that means “prune” also means “clean.” Christ is the vine and we are the branches. To make us “even more fruitful” (verse 2), he needs to prune us. Then there’s an interesting statement:

You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you (John 15:3, NIV).

In other words “you are already pruned.” The disciples were soaking up Jesus’ teachings on a daily basis.

Think about it: God’s word prunes or cleans us! It washes out the dust and grime. It clips away at the rough edges, those tendencies to sin, those fears and rebellious thoughts. If we stray from abiding in the Word, we stray from our Gardener’s clippers. We get messy. Our life is more self-centered and less fruitful.

Lord, I’m ready… for my daily “bath!”
