Hungary: More than Goulash
Just a taste!
It wasn’t really my choice to “go to Hungary;” an event for authors and publishers (LittWorld) was taking place there, so finally, I signed up. If you’d asked me previously what I knew about the country, perhaps I’d have remembered that there’s a typical dish known as Hungarian goulash. Oh yes, I knew it was in Central Europe, not far from what used to be the USSR.
I might not even have remembered the name of the capital, Budapest (and I certainly didn’t know that it’s pronounced Budapesht). By checking a map previously, I had seen that it shared a small part of its border with Ukraine, but I trusted that the organizers of Littworld had decided it was safe enough, war and all, to go ahead with the conference.
As it turned out, the venue was not in Budapest, but over an hour away in Siofok on Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, a peaceful, popular place for summer vacations, in particular. The grounds of our hotel stretched to the lakeshore, where one could often see geese and swans gliding in and out of the cattails.
