Judging a Book by its Cover

The other day I was traveling on our city’s Metrobus. As I reached for the pole to keep my balance, I noticed the arms of a young man seated in front of me, covered with tattoos. Some designs were red and black roses, but one was a large, scary skull. At times such a sight puts me on guard, as such body decoration can be a sign of gang membership, or be found on kids looking for a cellphone to steal.

Another woman, apparently in her 60s like myself, boarded at the same time, her arm in a sling. The guy politely stood up and offered her his seat. After she got off at another station, he waved his hand for me to sit down.

As you can imagine, my presuppositions about the fellow had changed by then!

Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment. (ESV)
