Like Aslan coming back to Narnia: Vermont hills starting to green; brisk, clean April air; white birches constrasting with the clear blue skies; a few crocuses bravely popping through patches of snow. Winter is finally losing the fight.

Remember this day, when city smog, honking cars, and cement-enclosed heat threaten to overwhelm and depress you. Keep the mental snapshot of those moments that lifted your spirits.

It’s cozy around the fire Dad has built in the fireplace on a chilly evening, and I’m grateful knowing he did it for me. We reminisce together; I’m sure his aches and pains dissolve at least a shade as we enjoy one another’s presence. After the fire dies down, we eventually rise and he bends to kiss my cheek and say, “Good night. Love you.”

Call on this memory to warm your heart when you enter that home that seems more empty now, and will never be the same without him.
